¿Qué hacer cuando el sistema dice NO durante 40 años?

Inspired by Nobel Laureate Dr. Katalin Karikó, and dedicated to every woman on the move who carries on with quiet brilliance.

Her struggles began early: even her university application was once blocked by authorities in Hungary.

For four decades, Dr. Katalin Karikó devoted herself to studying mRNA—a fragile, complex molecule that many abandoned as impossible to work with.

Her journey was anything but easy: filled with failed experiments, scepticism, and endless setbacks.

She didn’t persevere because the road was smooth.

She stayed because she believed in the science, in its power, and most importantly, in herself.

Her resilience was tested time and again:

• No promotions.
• No grants.
• Demotions.
• Exclusion.
• Threats of deportation.

Yet, in the shadows and silence, she kept going.

After 40 years of rejection and limited support, a simple conversation by a photocopier with immunologist Dr. Drew Weissman sparked a collaboration that changed everything.

Together, they discovered how to modify mRNA to avoid triggering harmful immune responses, laying the foundation for the revolutionary mRNA vaccines that helped fight COVID-19.

In 2023, Dr. Karikó was finally awarded the Nobel Prize alongside Dr. Weissman, a testament to decades of persistence, quiet courage, and brilliance that reshaped global health.

This wasn’t luck. It wasn’t a single moment of genius.

It was unwavering faith.

Slow, steady courage.

An unshakable belief in what she could offer the world, even when the world turned away.

At WEMatter, we work with women whose journeys reflect this spirit:

→ Women building new lives far from home
→ Women juggling families and late-night studies
→ Women told they’re “too ambitious,” “too old,” or “too foreign” — yet they persist anyway

Because they believe in something bigger:
A dream. A child’s future. A new beginning. A better world.

Dr. Karikó’s story reminds us:

Recognition may come late.
But the true meaning starts the moment you say YES to your purpose.
